What are the Pros/Cons of Various Gutter Protection Systems?

Why are some  gutter protection systems better than others? There are various ways to classify and rate gutter covers, gutter guards and other gutter protection products. They can be divided into very broad or very specific categories. Let’s review the pros & cons of each.

There are six basic types of gutter protection systems or devices:

  • Reverse curve gutter covers
  • Mesh or gutter screens
  • Bottle brush gutter inserts
  • Foam type gutter inserts

Reverse Curve Gutter Helmet Design

The reverse curve is designed to direct water downward into the gutter through a tiny slit but encourage leaves to fall to the ground. It’s known to be the most effective gutter protection design. Gutter Helmet is a reverse curve gutter cover.

Mesh or screen gutter guard systems are sheets filled with holes that cover the gutter and attach to the roof shingles. Small holes are better than large holes because they don’t clog as easily. This type of gutter protection still allows for small leaves and debris like pine needles to enter gutters. This is not an effective long term solution, especially if your home is in a wooded area.

Bottle brush gutter guards are similar to those pokey bristles that prevent birds from landing on things like statues. The bristles face upright so debris rests on top and get stuck on bristles.

Foam Type gutter protection systems are made from a plastic that fits directly into the gutter. It’s supposed to block all the debris falling from the roof and into the gutter. Instead, leaves accumulate on top of the foam and break down. Debris enters gutters  and can still lead to clogs and other problems.

Gutter Helmet solid gutter covers are the most effective gutter protection system on the market today. Our patented design has been protecting homes for over 25 years. Every Gutter Helmet system comes with a Triple Lifetime Transferable Warranty.
